About Us

The Adapt to Impact team is a part of the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering (CIDE) at the University of Colorado Denver. Since the fall of 2024, we have been providing support to Colorado’s childcare providers to better include children with disabilities in their programs through this project. Adapt to Impact builds off of the success of two previously funded CIDE projects: Inclusion & Universal Design Project and Project Include. Funding for Adapt to Impact is provided by collaborators including Early Intervention Colorado and Colorado Department of Education.

Maureen Melonis, M.N.S., CCC-SLP, Associate Director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Engineering and Project Director for the Assistive Technology Program of Colorado has over thirty years of experience in the field of Assistive Technology (AT).  She began her career as a speech language pathologist, developing a passion for the power of technology to open doors to inclusion. She has been principal/co-investigator, author and/or contract manager for a range of federal, state, and local government contracts and grants which support professionals in the field with the technical assistance, coaching, professional development and access to AT equipment needed for success.

In her role at the University, she has developed numerous training curriculums around assistive technology, adult learning strategies and curriculum development.  Her technology development and application research has focused on language development and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as well as early childhood, inclusion, and leadership.  She has presented at state, national and international conferences on assistive technology and has published numerous resources in the field.

With appointments in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pediatrics, she pursued her passion in leading programs to ensure AT is implemented effectively.
