Program: CU Anschutz in Guatemala: Undergraduate Nursing Community/Population Health Clinical Experience
Interacting with the communities of Guatemala has opened my eyes to the richness of diversity and the importance of listening to and accepting different cultures as a future nurse. Experiencing the Guatemalan culture firsthand has altered my perspective on many things, especially healthcare. I used to have a painted picture of healthcare being driving to a clinic or hospital, getting care from doctors and nurses on site, and using advanced medical equipment. However, while in Guatemala, nurses were the ones driving out to their communities and conducting home visits with such little medical equipment yet the level of trust the patients had to allow the nurses into their homes was beautiful. Even though the nurses didn’t have advanced medical devices, I was able to witness just how important listening to the patient is rather than relying upon technology! Studying abroad in Guatemala truly reminded me of the Art of Nursing and why I decided to become a nurse.
