Sponsor Regulations & Policies

Some Sponsors set limitations on the number of online/remote/hybrid courses that students can take. Students who fail to request approval for an online/remote/hybrid course will be required to pay for the tuition and fees themselves for the online/remote/hybrid course. The University does not bill the sponsor for any unapproved online/remote/hybrid courses.

Some Sponsors will not validate degrees for students upon completion due to unapproved online/remote/hybrid courses, so make sure to check with your sponsor what the policy is.

If you are an undergraduate student sponsored by the Kuwait Cultural Office, please note that as of July 2023, your degree will not be authenticated if you take more than 4 online courses during your studies. KCO defines an online course as one that is more than 50% online. If you are a graduate student sponsored by KCO, you are not allowed to take any online courses during your studies.

 

Students may not be allowed to enroll in another educational institution with the intentions to transfer credit to University of Colorado Denver without prior approval from the Sponsor.

All students who plan to enroll in another educational institution must also request approval from their CU Denver School or College and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).

The Sponsored Student Coordinator will notify the student's Sponsor once the authorization is given by the ISSS Specialist.

Undergraduate students (enrolled in courses at the Bachelor level) may be restricted by their Sponsor from enrolling in graduate level courses without prior approval. Graduate students should also check with their Sponsor to determine if they can enroll in undergraduate level courses. Please make sure to check with your ISSS specialist to see how enrollment at another degree level impacts your immigration status, if applicable.

Students must request approval from their Sponsor prior to changing their major or area of emphasis listed on the FGL.

Student must request approval from their Sponsor to add a second major.

Students must follow the academic plan of the major approved by the Sponsor. Students may risk losing their scholarship if it is determined they have been pursuing an academic plan for an unapproved major.

Some sponsors may require students to request approval before declaring a minor and/or certificate.

Students should contact their sponsor before adding a minor or certificate to determine whether prior approval will be needed. If approval is required, it is recommended that students receive official approval from their sponsor before declaring a minor and/or certificate.

Study Abroad is any academic program taught outside the United States. Sponsors restrict any academic courses done outside of the country, regardless if it is a CU Denver course led by CU Denver faculty.

Students may not be approved by their Sponsors to participate in a study abroad program. Please check with your Sposnor to see if this is an option before making plans to participate in a program.

An internship is a professional experience opportunity working in a company or organization off campus which could be linked to a course for academic credit. Most internship courses at CU Denver do not have classroom instruction. Any course not done in a classroom is typically restricted by sponsors. Please verify with your sponsor if they allow internship courses before enrolling and pursuing an internship. In addition, F-1 and J-1 students need special permission from the International Student and Scholar Services to pursue an internship opportunity off campus, regardless if it is paid or unpaid.

Students at the ESL Academy must request approval from their Sponsors to take vacation during an ESL term.

Degree-seeking students must request approval from their Sponsors to take a Fall or Spring semester off, but typically do not require approval to take vacation during the winter and summer breaks.

Please check with your Sponsor to determine whether or not you are required to enroll in classes during the summer semester.

Do not change your major or register for courses related to a different major, unless you have authorization from your Sponsor. Students risk their salaries put on hold by Sponsor and a hold placed on their student account by the University of Colorado Denver.

Steps To Request A Major Change

1. Notify International Sponsored Student Coordinator and Academic Advisor with request to change your major.
2. Academic Advisor will issue you a "Request for Major Change" letter.
3. Send letter to sponsor and wait for approval.
4. Send updated FGL (Financial Guarantee Letter) with new major to the International Sponsored Student Coordinator
5. International Sponsored Student Coordinator will notify your Academic Department to change your major.

Majors Not Approved By Sponsor

IF your Sponsor does NOT approve your request to change your major, you do have the option to waive financial sponsorship and change your status to self-pay, which means you are reliable to pay for tuition and fees to complete your degree.

Official dated bank statement or bank letter on original bank letterhead, which is no more than six months old and which includes account number(s), account type(s), the current and average balance with a clear indication of the currency, in English language or accompanied by an English translation, and which is signed and dated by an appropriate official of the bank or other financial institution.

Each individual contributing financially to your education must complete the Financial Commitment Form.
