CU Denver Campus 9-Month Contract Faculty Pay Changes starting AY 2022-23

  • Human Resources
  • CU Denver Campus 9-Month Contract Faculty Pay Changes starting AY 2022-23

What is Happening?

Current State: 9-month faculty on the Denver campus are currently paid September 1 through May 31 even though classes start mid-August and end in mid-May.

Future State: Starting with academic year 2022-2023, pay dates will shift to align with the academic year.  For academic year 2022-2023, pay dates will be August 15, 2022 through May 12, 2023 (faculty are expected to start work one week before classes begin each semester).

Who?

CU Denver 9-month faculty, including tenured and tenure-track faculty, Instructors, and Clinical Teaching Track faculty.

When?

August 2022 will be the first month faculty will see this change in paychecks.

How does this affect Faculty?

Alignment

  • Pay will align with actual work days.

Transparency

  • Greater transparency in how 9-month faculty contract pay is calculated.

Accuracy

  • Pay advices and employment verifications will accurately reflect their new full salary when there is a mid-academic-year pay increase (January 1).

Timely Pay

  • New faculty starting work in August will not need to wait until September for their first paycheck.

How does this Affect HR Staff?

Pay Calculations

  • Fewer manual calculations.  HCM will automatically calculate pay for leaves, early terminations, and mid-academic year pay increases.

Fewer Uploads

  • With a January 1 pay increase, currently we upload the new salary + another upload with the contract amount to pay out that AY.  With this change, we will upload the new salary and the system will pay it out accurately without the second upload.

Accuracy

  • Fewer manual calculations, resulting in fewer potential over or under payments.

What Does Pay Look Like?

Current State:

9 pay 9: Equal paychecks between September and May

9 pay 12: Equal paychecks between September and August

Future State:

9 pay 9: Partial paycheck in August (start date is week before classes begin), equal paychecks between September and April, partial paycheck in May (end date is commencement).

9 pay 12: Partial paycheck in August (start date is week before classes begin), equal paychecks between September and July, partial paycheck in August (end date is the Friday before the AY 2023-24 contract starts).

Please visit https://www.cu.edu/docs/contract-proration-calculator for a contract pay calculator.  Enter Denver Campus and your total gross salary in the Contract Worth field.  If you are 9 pay 9, your gross monthly pay is what appears in the CRG column.  If you are 9 pay 12, your gross monthly pay is what appears in the Check Gross column.

Frequently Asked Questions

The election form will be available in the UCD Access Portal from May 2 – July 15, 2022 at 5pm.

Yes, if your academic year salary is not greater than $163,400.  Per Section 409A of the Internal Revenue code, you cannot elect to receive payment installments over a 12 month period if your base compensation for all 9 pay 12 contracts combined exceeds the federally established limit for compensation earned in one year but deferred until a future year.  The IRS limit for deferred compensation from 2022 to 2023 is $20,500, which translates to an academic year salary limit of $163,400.  The IRS limit may change annually.

Benefits and eligibility will not change.  Full insurance premiums will come out of partial month pay in August and May.  Do keep in mind that if you have a set amount of pay taken out for a voluntary deduction (retirement, FSA, etc.) or additional tax withholding, that set amount will continue to come out of each paycheck.

Faculty are still eligible for summer pay up to the limits of 1/9 of AY salary per month, totaling 3/9 of AY salary during summer.  Summer will run mid-May through mid-August.

You will receive the full last paycheck from your AY 21-22 contract.  In addition, you will receive the first partial month paycheck for your AY 22-23 contract.  So, your pay in August 2022 will be higher than normal.

The system looks at working days per month and percentage of the total contract worked each month to calculate pay.  It also looks to pay equal amounts per month if there are complete months worked.  Pay calculators will be available soon.

Faculty promotional pay increases will continue to occur at the beginning of the academic year.

This change is only applicable for 9-month contract faculty.  We are looking to make a similar shift in pay dates for Lecturers and TAs/GPTIs as soon as possible, but timing depends on a HR system update.

Yes.  Employees will continue to be paid on the last business day of each month.  It is the amount paid on each pay date that will be changing.
