Classroom Technology Audit Project

About the Classroom Technology Audit Project

The Digital Strategy Task Force report recommended that CU Denver complete a classroom audit that could inform a roadmap for technology upgrades in order to ensure appropriate classroom technology for teaching across modalities.

Current Phase

Phase 3

To facilitate more timely upgrades, CU Denver will use temporary staff to complete the next set of classrooms during the Spring 2025 semester and into Summer 2025. The team will work with the registrar’s office to coordinate classroom relocations. Classrooms with outdated distance learning hardware will be upgraded with tier 2 technology (marked with an asterisk) to ensure capabilities in rooms meet current needs/demands.

Preliminary Relocation Schedule for Spring 2025

Upcoming Phases

Phase 4

Phase 4 will begin in Spring 2025 and continue through Fall 2025 with the following tasks:

  • Work with AHEC and facilities to identify any additional classrooms where CU Denver is responsible for the technology, determine which classrooms still need tier 1 upgrades and complete upgrades.
  • Work with faculty to determine which additional classrooms need tier 2 upgrades. Secure funding and complete tier 2 upgrades.
  • Work with schools/college technology leaders to identify funding sources, coordinate resources, and identify technology requirements for school/college owned classrooms.
  • Develop a website resource which outlines the technology, room configuration and support resources for upgraded classrooms.

Completed Phases

Phase 1

Phase 1 included initial data gathering and collecting feedback about cross-disciplinary classroom needs. An audit of CU Denver owned classrooms was conducted by Corey Parham, Assistant Director of Service Delivery and Operations in Denver’s Office of Information Technology. The initial data collection was guided by the following questions:

  1. What is the age of the current technology infrastructure in each classroom?
  2. What is the functionality and features included in each room?
  3. Does the room offer short-term or permanent technology solutions?
  4. Does the current technology in any way hinder the faculty teaching experience or the student learning experience?

On November 1, 2022, Corey Parham and Katie Linder presented preliminary findings from data collected on the 96 CU Denver classrooms and discussed some possible next steps for the classroom technology audit project. For those not able to attend, a recording of the session can be found below.

Phase 2

Phase 2 of the project moved from data gathering and planning to implementation. Based on feedback from faculty members in phase 1 of the project, a tiered structure was developed for classroom upgrades (see table below). This tiered structure represents basic upgrades for all classrooms (tier 1) and more advanced upgrades (tier 2) that may be applied to some classrooms based on institutional need.

CU Denver Classroom Technology Upgrades

The first 23 CU Denver owned classrooms will be upgraded to tier 1 in the summer 2024. After gathering additional feedback, the exact number of tier 1 and tier 2 classrooms will be determined during phase 3.

Tier 1

  • LCD Laser projector*
  • Low Voltage Controlled (LVC) projector screen*
  • ADA compliant instructor podium
  • Annotation Monitor with Computer
  • HDMI Laptop Connection
  • Document Camera
  • Intuitive Touchscreen Controller
  • CU Denver Wireless Internet
  • Technical Support Provided by Denver OIT

Tier 2

  • LCD Laser projector*
  • Low Voltage Controlled (LVC) projector screen*
  • ADA compliant instructor podium
  • Annotation Monitor with Computer
  • HDMI Laptop Connection
  • Document Camera
  • Intuitive Touchscreen Controller
  • Classroom Audio Speakers
  • 2 Cameras (instructor and audience views)
  • Classroom Mics in Ceiling
  • Panopto and Zoom ready
  • CU Denver Wireless Internet
  • Technical Support Provided by Denver OIT

*Larger classrooms will be equipped with dual projectors and projection screens

Proof of Concept Tier 2 Classroom

A proof-of-concept room for tier 2 upgrades was installed to demonstrate the capabilities used in hybrid and distance learning. Additional feedback on tier 2 technology will be gathered in phase 3 (see more below). If you would like to test out the new classroom technology, please use EMS (schedule.ucdenver.edu) to schedule North Classroom, Room 1405. This room features:

  • Annotation Monitor with Computer
  • ADA Accessible Podium
  • Cameras and Classroom Microphones

Summer 2024 Classroom Technology Upgrades

The project leads worked with facilities, faculty and administration to determine funding and determine a plan for the classroom technology upgrades. The first 23 classrooms upgraded were in the North Classroom. The upgrades took place during summer 2024. These classrooms were upgraded with tier 1 technology.
