Dr. Betsy Metzger has been faculty affairs senior coordinator in the Office of the Provost since 2018, after serving as executive assistant to the dean and director of communications in the College of Architecture and Planning for 14 years. She was at Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) at the University of Denver, working to advance women in higher education administration, prior to coming to CU Denver in 2004. Betsy has a PhD in Human Communication Studies from the University of Denver, MA in Women’s History from Sarah Lawrence College, and BA in Mass Communications from Stephens College. She is a political activist who loves Denver and Colorado, visiting art exhibits, attending live theatre and comedy, and doing crossword puzzles and handicrafts.
Betsy coordinates and manages the processes for multiple stages in a faculty member’s career: reappointment, tenure, and promotion, clinical teaching track personnel actions, post-tenure review, sabbaticals, faculty awards, distinguished professor designation, and emeritus/emerita status. She is the primary liaison between the Office of the Provost and the schools, colleges, and libraries on the Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses regarding faculty-related reports, policies and guidelines, and works closely with both Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Committees (VCACs) for Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion. Betsy also manages logistics for faculty affairs events such as the annual celebration of faculty excellence and the tenure and promotion luncheon.
Betsy communicates with deans, associate deans, and faculty affairs and HR contacts in the schools, colleges, and library to ensure that faculty action documents are accurate and complete, and shepherds paperwork through all levels of approval. She interprets and implements policies, forms, and guidelines.
A favorite aspect of the job is being able to notify faculty members that their pending milestone – whether it be appointment to the clinical teaching track, reappointment to a tenure-track position, tenure, promotion to the next level, sabbatical leave, or emeritus/a status – has received approval. Betsy gets satisfaction from getting individuals the right answers, guiding them to resources, and helping workflows go smoothly.
