As CU Denver strives to become an equity-serving institution, several key areas of focus have emerged or gained prominence that have influenced both our local and national conversations on teaching and cultivating spaces for students to learn and thrive, both in class and in their future careers: generative AI, open educational practices, and inclusive pedagogies. As a campus, we recognize the key importance of approaching these practices and changes through the lens of equity and intentionality.
To address this important need, the TIPS Division is opening a new strand of collaborative course design grant opportunities for faculty who are interested in partnering with a TIPS instructional designer to integrate:
Instructional designers working within a collaborative course design process aim to help faculty articulate their vision and design learning experiences with intention. Instructional designers will not evaluate courses, nor will they impose any requirements in terms of content or types of engagement.
Grants are open to faculty of all ranks and disciplines, including IRC faculty, and are available for all courses regardless of modality. Although the grants are not part of a competitive process, we are prioritizing funding courses as equally as possible among each of the three identified categories (OEP; Inclusive Pedagogy; AI). We intend to partner with as many folks as we are able to within the constraints of the funds available for the grants. Limited funds are available; TIPS will fund proposals that align with the parameters of the grant until funds are exhausted.
Faculty interested in these grants should email Director of Program Development Jason Drysdale (jason.drysdale@ucdenver.edu) to schedule a meeting to get more information about the grants and discuss their proposed course redesign project. As a part of this discussion, interested faculty will share how their proposed project fits within a course design grant category, describe their goals for the course redesign, and agree to engage in the collaborative course design process with a TIPS instructional designer on a mutually agreed upon timeline that adheres to the grant requirements and important deadlines.
As these categories can be defined quite loosely and differently, we have created some definitions to help faculty determine if their course redesign project is a fit with one or more of these pedagogical areas of focus:
