Social Wellness: Establishing Social Connections

Guest Blog Presented by: Em Alves, Violence Prevention Education Coordinator

In an increasingly vaccinated world, we’re readjusting to the safe, in-person options many of us have regained. It’s no surprise that we are struggling to feel connected to others and use our very rusty social skills.

  1. Sign up for newsletters that appeal to you! Many CU Denver offices run exciting events specifically geared towards meeting new people. These events, featured in informative newsletters, are often held monthly and can be a great way to get connected with others looking for community.

  2. Get involved in a student organization! From the Sex Positivity Society to the Multiracial Biracial Student Alliance, the Volleyball Club or Women in Business group, there’s a student organization (or two!) for you. Check MyLynx for a list of all the student organizations. Don’t see one you’d like to be in? Look into starting your own! Someone else may be waiting for you to do it. In addition, check out the University Calendar for campus wide events and opportunities.

  3. Volunteer your time. So many groups on campus (and off) run volunteer programs or are looking for volunteers. Volunteering can be a fulfilling way to make a difference in our communities and impact a cause you believe in, while also putting yourself “out there" socially. Talk about feeding three birds with one hand!

  4. Don’t get discouraged. The part about “putting yourself out there” and making friends that people don’t like to admit, is that it’s hard and requires practice. Maybe you don’t do too well right out the gate, but each experience can teach you a new skill that you can integrate for future success. Each experience can also teach you what you’re looking for in your social connections, and once you know what you’re looking for, it gets that much easier.

  5. Virtual is still an option! The amazing thing about zoom nowadays is we all have practice with it. Zoom is an incredible way to keep connected to your community through fully virtual or hybrid events, for the days when you can’t make it to campus for whatever reason. There are more ways to get involved remotely than ever these days!

Readjusting to socializing in person again is going to be a challenge, but one that our community is prepared to face together. There’s so much to explore with other community members on and off our beautiful campus. The first step can be scary, but let’s take it together.
