About CU Secure/Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) offers a stronger level of security to protect your credentials and the university. MFA has become Duoone of the best ways to ensure the only person logging into your account is you. It does this by using something you know (your university password), something you have (a mobile device or landline) and somewhere you are (on or off campus).

MFA will be implemented using Duo Security with four key university systems: virtual private network (VPN) used to connect to campus resources from remote locations, virtual desktop (VDI), UCD Access Portal and Office 365 (including email).

Get started now.

The first service to begin using Duo Security for multi-factor authentication is the university’s VPN. Duo will turn your mobile phone, iPad, tablet or landline into a multi-factor authenticator. To ensure there is no disruption to your VPN connectivity to the university network, the following actions are required:

1) Install and register for Duo Security. Installation and registration instructions are available here. For a quick look into Duo, view this short video

2) Download and install the new VPN Palo Alto GlobalProtect. Instructions and links to download the new VPN client are available below based on the device that you use.

Tips for installing Duo Security and GlobalProtect:

  1. Install Duo Mobile first before installing the new VPN client (if authenticating via push or passcode options). Ensure that you download the app with the green Duo icon!
  2. Access the VPN client and installation guidebook that is appropriate for your computer.
  3. When using the VPN, be sure you are off-campus and disconnected from the network. If you are connected to the university network you are already on the network that VPN connects to and you will receive an error message.
  4. Each campus has its own VPN portal: dc-vpn.ucdenver.edu and amc-vpn.ucdenver.edu. Select the appropriate server for your campus after installing the new VPN software.
