Lecture Overview
The talk will discuss the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an initiative for transcontinental infrastructure construction conceptualized in China and under implementation in over 70 countries. The BRI primarily promotes the building of physical infrastructure that will connect the partner country globally.

Despite its needs-based approach, the BRI has been widely criticized for creating undesirable effects, such as increasing partner countries’ economic dependence on China through debt-trap lending. In the talk, we will identify and explain what is different about the BRI, the evidence that is available on the impacts of the BRI and the implications for policymakers.
